7 Surprising Benefits Of Cold Showering

Are you a fan of a cold shower? Do you prefer having it quick and easy, or you like to enjoy long, hot shower and dive deep into your thoughts analysing and over-analysing things? You can find benefits of both, but in this article, let’s check the benefits of cold shower.

Your Body Needs It

You have seen many football matches, or some other sports. What happens when a player gets injured? Ice! It reduces swelling around the injury, muscle spasm, pain and bleeding into the tissue. Cold water does the same, maybe not as effective as ice for injuries, but it helps your body in many ways. Here are some of them:

  •         Treats sore muscles- you do not have to be a professional athlete, or run a marathon, or play a football or box match, but having a cold shower after your regular jogging, cycling or gym, can help you relieve sore muscle.
  •         Hair and skin- Have you got your hair dyed? Then forget about hot water if you want your dye last longer. Hot water opens hair cuticles and the dye is rinsed out. With cold water, cuticles are tightened and the colour is kept for longer time. With cold water, your hair has more shine, it’s healthier (cold water flattens hair follicles). The same happens with your skin. Hot water opens pores that become clogged with dirt; cold water tightens them and tightened pores mean less sagging.
  •         Better circulation- a cold shower will make your blood ‘’run faster’’. Arteries pump blood more efficiently and the result is: all organs get more blood so they themselves can perform much better.
  •         Burn your fat- we have two kinds of fat in our body: white and brown. The one we do not like is the white one. You have to work a lot to get rid of it. But, the brown fat, stimulated by cold water, can burn down calories to keep you warm. Want to lose some weight? Go and get some cold shower.

  •         Stay focused- hot shower makes us get lost in our world we hold within, and that’s not a problem at all when you have time to discover it. But when home, studying or working, you need to stay focused on your task, having a short cold showers can actually help you do it. Hot water can lull you and make you feel sleepy, but the cold one will grab your mind. But a brief break from work or studying under the cold flow of cold water will have two-fold benefits: you’re still focused on your task and you relax. Cold water makes you breathe fast, which means more oxygen. Breathing faster improves your blood flow and when brain has more oxygen, it works much better.
  •         Stressed out? You have had a bad day and all you can think of is going home and having a shower and some good rest. Well, try to turn your faucet to cold, because cold water increases stress tolerance. The result of a 1994 study says that when a body is exposed to a cold stimulus, uric acid levels decrease and glutathione increase. An adaptation to repeated oxidative stress leads to body hardening and the result of it is an increased tolerance to stress.
  •         Depression- A cold shower sends vast amount of electrical impulses from peripheral nervous system to the central nervous system, which can have an anti-depressive effect:  the cold activates the sympathetic nervous system, increases the blood level of beta-endorphin and noradrenaline, and increases synaptic release of noradrenaline in the brain. For years, electric shocks had been used for treating depression. With a cold shower, you can afford yourself regular electric shock.
